I was curious about Sophia Kokosalaki when I was working on my lens, Made in Poland, as I found her designer clothing that was made in Poland, was available on eBay.
That was probably my first introduction to this cool designer--I wanted to know more about her, so I was compelled to write this lens ... Sophia Kokosalaki is the Greek fashion designer known for her style of pleating, folding and draping fabrics!
|||Sophia Kokosalaki (born 1972) is a well-known Greek fashion designer with her own label based in London. A graduate of London's Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, she was chosen to design the opening and closing ceremonial outfits for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, which were staged in her home town of Athens. Born and brought up in Greece where she studied literature at the University of Athens, Kokosalaki is regarded as a rising star of the London fashion world . After her career had been launched by UK Vogue magazine, she received the Elle Designer award and Art Foundation Award for Fashion in 2002 and New Generation Designer award in 2004, and receives regular editorial from Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and W magazines. In autumn 2006 she was appointed Creative Director of the leading Vionnet fashion house but resigned in May 2007, stating that she will solely concentrate on the development of her own label instead.
Her trademark style often features the classic Grecian draping combined with handcrafted elements, in an innovative fusion. Her specialty is soft flowing dresses, and her work with knitwear and leather has also drawn praise. Aiming to produce clothes that are perennially popular, Kokosalaki fuses the old and the new.|||PARIS: Sophia Kokosalaki brought her full focus back to her eponymous line this season and it showed. No longer designing for the house of Vionnet, and now with the artistic and financial backing of Renzo Rosso and his Diesel brand, the designer was freer than ever to explore and manipulate textiles. This time she delved deep into the duality of using fluid materials and bending them to her will to create stiff structured clothing.
The designer sent out a collection in keeping with the style that her Sophia Kokosalaki brand is known for - pleating, folding and draping fabrics - but she continues to push those trademark looks forward while deftly adding intricate beading on dresses to her repertoire.
Trends of the season were addressed but always with a Kokosalaki touch: Cuffed shorts had soft pleating at the pockets, a translucent trench came with a stormy sea crashing along the hem and a shift dress was constructed out of an abstract Asian print.
Among standouts were a shirt and jacket whose sleeves had been pleated and twisted back to expose the bare skin of the inner elbow, creating, in an instant, a new erogenous zone.
And there were those powerful dresses in black or white with contrasting pearl beading that curlicued around the breasts and created a receding checkerboard effect on the skirt that drew the eye into its depths.
